Sorry if what comes next is inexact or plain wrong, hope somebody will correct if so. But just in case it helps: My understanding is that clipping won't avoid executing the paint code. I believe that you need to implement your own container which, through knowledge of the specific scene you are building, can tell to allocate and paint only those children it knows are strictly needed. The recent addition of ClutterPaintVolume may be used by Clutter to avoid having to implement your own container.
