It is true that when in withdrawal or early phases of recovery, it is extremely important to avoid any situations that “trigger” cravings.  It is no different than quitting smoking.  Everyone who has quit can talk about how the cravings would hit after a meal, on the ride to work etc.  It is all psychological but just as hard to fight as actually taking that drag or drink can be. It does get easier with time but for a true alcoholic it is a lifelong “control” situation.  My loved one has been sober for 10 years and we now go to parties etc like we used to but if it is a “heavy drinking” situation it is not uncommon for him to tell me we have to leave, he doesn’t belong there.  Someone with impaired judgment/decision making would most likely just become more difficult to handle if the “buzz” wasn’t forthcoming.

Non-alcoholic beer is not truly non-alcoholic.  You are still feeding the addiction.

The chocolate & high carb snacks idea is good, though.

There was one suggestion for a pseudo-bar or "Happy Hour" activity.  For someone in withdrawal, this would likely trigger cravings, causing worse agitation.

That's interesting, Holly...we'll have to try the carbs/chocolate idea.
I should have thought of that....is there anything a little chocolate
doesn't help. ;o)

Thanks for the reply.
