I think a lot of us work extra hours, cover the floor when needed etc and we should as bona fide administrative, team player types.  However, I have learned to ask myself a few questions before agreeing such as:

1) Am I being asked to accommodate the same RN over and over who wouldn’t work an extra minute if their life depended on it.

2) Is it everyone here in the hallway being asked or just me?

3) Who else have they asked or is it me because I always say yes?

4) Am I such a good sport that I am everyone’s port in a storm because I am always agreeable?

It is fine to be part of team and do what we do after all, its part of what we are and why we succeed.  However, no point in being used, abused or a martyr.  There is nothing more sobering than facing a potentially terminal illness, looking around and realizing all you and your loved ones are missing because you work all the time.  Been there, done that and have learned there is a happy medium.
