The companies that make them are made for specific systems owned by the facility, which then downloads the info into the facility computer, and then into the database.  There are no "standalone" ones available, altho I bet I could program one into Hand D Base.  The problem there is - what do you do with it after it's in the PDA?  Other than sending it by cable or infra-red into the facility computer, there would be no way to "import" the assessment unless you knew the database format of the facility computer, AND the program would allow you to "import".  A few will, like Raven, but most don't - I think.  You know, I bet Nathan Lake would know a lot more about this than I would.

If anyone knows of specific software used for MDS purposes on a PDA can you please email me privately? Thanks.

Actually, there are a few programs now that use PDA's to complete the MDS.  I can't wait!

NEW PRODUCT RELEASE (AN OMNICARE COMPANY)

ACCU-MED DELIVERS SECURE and FLEXIBLE HANDHELD MDS ENTRY

Milford, OH, January 7, 2003 -- Accu-Med Services, Inc. announced today the release of MDS2Go, the first PDA (Personal Digital Assistant)-based MDS data entry solution for skilled nursing facilities.

Using MDS2Go, facility staff can enter assessments into a Palm OS-based PDA (personal digital assistant), which then synchronizes the information directly into Accu-Care for Windows clinical software. Multiple clinical disciplines can complete and "hot sync" sections of the MDS independently, at any time. Many assessments can be maintained at once, enabling users to complete only the sections for which they are responsible without interrupting the work flow of other disciplines.

Initial response to MDS2Go has been positive. "MDS2Go is an intuitive, secure, and affordable way to get accurate information into the MDS," said Accu-Med Clinical Product Director Sue Lewis, R.N. "It eliminates the need to transfer information another caregiver has written on a slip of paper."

MDS2Go is also HIPAA friendly, with passwords required to log in. In addition, MDS2Go tracks and logs each change to the assessment, by user, providing an audit trail. If the PDA will be used elsewhere, MDS2Go allows users to temporarily remove all resident data to ensure confidentiality.

For more information, call Accu-Med Services at 1-800-777-9141.
