Agree with MDS lady, if the resident was discharged prior to completion of the assessment and then subsequently readmitted to the facility, the AB1 date should be the original admission date--not the readmission date.
The source is in the revised manual on page 2-24 under Discharged -prior to completion of the initial assessment.  Second paragraph "If the resident is unstable and has several return visits to the hospital before the Admission assessment is completed, the facility should continue to submit discharges prior to the completion of the initial assessment (AA8a=8) until the resident is in the facility long enough to complete the comprehensive Admission assessment.  The same date of entery (AB1) should be used for all these discharges."

Ok, I know the revised manual takes precedence over the Q&A's but has the AB1 after discharge 08 been changed rule been changed.....the following is from the 5/02 Q&A's, 5-26

Reason for Discharge 8: Discharged Prior to Initial Admission Assessment

OBRA Assessments - This code (MDS Item A8a=8) is used whenever the resident is discharged prior to completing the initial admission assessment. This code is used even if a Medicare 5-day assessment has been completed. This code is also used regardless of whether you expect the resident to return. The OBRA initial admission assessment must be completed within 14 days of the reentry date.

Date of Entry (MDS Item AB1) -Retain the original date of entry. Enter the readmission/return date in MDS Item A4.

A Discharge where AA8a = 8 is considered a final discharge and makes all
dates prior to that irrelevant. AB1 should be 1/20/03.

Rena,
I have a question as to what the AB1 date should be given the following
scenario:
Resident Y:
Admitted 1/1/03 private pay
Hospitalized 1/5/03 D/C'd with #8
Readmitted 1/10/03 # 9 Medicare Part A
Hospitalized 1/12/03 d/c #8
Readmitted 1/20/03 #9 Medicare Part A
AB1 date should be: 1/1/03 or 1/20/03 ?
Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving
