An unavoidable pressure ulcer is allegedly one that occurs due to the resident's condition and not as a result of poor care.  It is a rather hotly debated topic, with the factors for deciding which is what being the topics most contested.   I've attached a few articles on the description, what attorney's are looking for in malpractice cases, etc.

In general, pressure ulcers were originally believed to be caused by "pressure", usually due to the negligence in changing position of the patient by the caregiver(s).  Nowadays, people know that a variety of factors are related to skin breakdown, including moisture, incontinence, inadequate nutrition, circulatory embarrassment, edema, and so on.  Ulcers that arise due to ischemia are usually considered unavoidable, and diabetics are considered a major risk group here.

Hope this helps.

The Family Practice Notebook has a decent discussion of other medical causes of skin ulcers and some complications in clear language under III: Differential Diagnoses:

Subject: pressure sore question,please

I hope everyone had a great thanksgiving, and now we are shopping till we drop for the holidays!!

On my Nursing Home inspection form there are two questions, I hope someone could answer and clarity for me, please.

1} What is the meaning of unavoidable pressure sores opposed to avoidable?
I am not really sure of this meaning.

2} And how many pressure sores in a Nursing home should I be concerning about? 5, 10 , 20. More or less, that would be a red flag for me?
Any website or info. I can read or learn about this?
Thank  you for you expert help.

Happy Holidays to everyone and their families.
