The federal government utilizes the Medicare Data Communication Network (MDCN) and the AT&T global dialer for MDS transmission to all states. Per CMS, this is not going to change anytime in the immediate future. The dial-up with the analog phone line is the only way!!

When I inquired to Meyers and Stauffer about this, they told me now, you had
to use the dial up network, I would call where you transmit to.

Subject: secure web site vs dialup

I am in the process of getting a new PC and our Hospital Information
Services wants to know if there is any possibility of my sending MDS data
through a secure Web based access rather than a dialup modem set up.
What they do now to keep the modem separate from the network is to have me
go into a hardware profile that is separate from the network.
