It is important to try to ascertain the resident's weight change on admission. Using the RAI guidelines of looking back 30 and 180 days is helpful. Even though you cannot be absolutely sure of the family's figures, it is helpful for the dietitian to know whether or not the resident has lost weight in the recent past. It does not affect your quality indicators and is helpful information for care planning. Sometimes that family can supply a weight from a doctor's visit. If not, they can tell you if the resident's clothing size has changed in the past 6 months.

Please help with this question regarding calculating weight loss/gain. Our dietician has been looking back 30 to 180 days for admission weight loss percentages as on page 3-151 section a. This does at times give us a tremendous weight loss as family and previous weight gathered somewhere else are not entirely reliable. Do we have to go back 30 to 180 days or can we use just our admission weight?
Thanks to all for your input and help
