Since he was at the hospital for more than 24 hours, he should have been discharged from the SNF with return anticipated (if his initial Admission assessment [AA8a=1] was completed before he went back to the hospital.  If not, the discharge tracking code would be Discharged Prior to Completion of the Initial Assessment).  On his return, a Reentry Tracking Form is required (if the discharge tracking code was return anticipated), and the Medicare schedule would start over again with the Medicare Readmission/Return assessment.

The Discharge and Reentry Flowchart on page 2-26 of the RAI User's Manual is very helpful in figuring out what to do about discharge and reentry tracking and which assessments are due.

Medicare A resident out to hosp for surgery, stayed over 24 hours(30), was expected to be admitted, but was on observation only, not inpatient per hospital billing dept.
Is the following correct?
do Discharge &reentry tracking forms, deduct 1 day from total days available, do NOT start Medicare schedule over again

difference of opinion here--thanks to anyone who can help
