Although this is a different reason, the resident never had a break in the spell of
illness so cannot get a new benefit period. If he continued to receive peg tube
feedings (at the required percentage and ccs) after his 100 days expired a year ago,
he did not break his spell of illness. So has no new benefit period.

Subject: BREAK IN SPELL OF ILLNESS??

Have a resident who was re-admitted to the hospital--has been here over
a year with a PEG tube for all nutrition and hydration(used part A
benefit about 1 year ago for this). He has had a new 3 day stay and now
has a trach. Can he be skilled for the trach, or no because no break in
spell of illness(went straight from here back to hospital)?? I am
leaning towards no, but would like some input.
Thanks.
