Title: Coding Pain
Deanna,
If there is evidence that the resident experienced pain in the previous 7 days, then you code it appropriately, either daily or less than daily. This can be noted on the MAR when PRNs are given for breakthrough pain, or on a pain assessment flow sheet, or by asking the resident (if they are capable of answering) if they have had pain.

If they are receiving routine pain meds, and are not requiring prns for breakthrough, and state they are having no pain, then you would code for no pain.

Subject: Coding Pain

Coding Pain,
I need help with coding pain symptoms (Sec J2). I have always thought that you code pain (any type) if the resident had pain in the last 7 days no matter what interventions were implemented. The question has come up regarding how to code for residents receiving routine pain meds and breakthrough pain. Please share how you code this section.
