if the resident is no longer symptomatic but is still
receiving antibiotics supported by significant laboratory findings and
with a physician-written diagnosis - it would not be coded on the
MDS.
Rena
I have reviewed this response a dozen
times. The manual (pg 3-136) refers to "includes chronic and acute
symptomatic infection(s) in the last 30 days." I do not interpret
from that a requirement that the symptoms must be current.
I would hope that we didn't identify a UTI in a 30 day look back period
and they still have symptoms today. If we are looking at current
symptoms, the look back period would be 7 days??? After a couple
days on an antibiotic, symptoms subside. If antibiotic treatment is
continuing and lab work on the chart, I have coded it. I would hate
to think of the number of corrections that may need to be submitted if I
was NOT to have coded this on the MDS?? If you would be so kind as
to offer further clarification, I would certainly appreciate a better
understanding.
thanks
