Hi. Here is the reference:
http://cms.hhs.gov/manuals/104_claims/clm104c06.pdf
40.3.5 - Determine Utilization on Day of Discharge, Death, or Day
Beginning a Leave of Absence:

"The exception to the general rule of not charging a utilization day for the
day of
discharge, death, or day beginning a leave of absence is where the patient
is admitted
with the expectation that he will remain overnight but is discharged, dies,
or is transferred
to a nonparticipating provider or a nonparticipating distinct part of the
same provider
before midnight of the same day. In these instances, such a day counts as a
utilization
day."

You need to do an MDS in this situation in order to get paid at a rate
higher than the default rate.

Subject: admit-discharge same day

I know that this has been discussed before about residents who are admitted
and discharged the same day and that there is a way to get paid for that
day. Can someone please point me to the correct place for this information
before they give away our resident's MR number. I hate to lose $200-$300.

Thanks in advance,
