Yes, go to the following web site.  http://cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2 and follow the link for the Final Rule on the National Provider Identifier (NPI) , or go to this direct web address:  http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/14mar20010800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2004/pdf/04-1149.pdf .  You can’t even apply for the number until 5/23/05.  No action is required prior to that date.  They are currently building the place that will process the numbers!  Compliance date with this HIPAA transaction rule is 5/23/07they are anticipating a 1-2 year implementation time frame).

Subject: New provider numbers

I have been hearing about facilities needing to obtain new provider numbers that need to go on the MDS beginning 2/1/04 but the billing office thought it did not go into effect until 3/1/04. Does anyone out there have any input into this situation? Apparently from our billing office there is some confusion over this issue . Thanks

Cheryl
