Any open areas? Was this on admission? Was he limited mobility? Bed Rest? Diabetic? 
Peripheral Vascular Disease? What does it sound like is the cause of the dark red? 
What did he do for foot care at home? What do his shoes look like? (I know - I've been 
told I ask too many questions....I guess it's the RN and Sherlock Holmes in me :)
