Doesn't the MD have to certify that the resident is end staage/6 months
or < in order to qualify for Hospice?

Hello,
I know this has been on the board in the past but up until now it has
never been an issue with me. My DON believes that all Hospice residents
should be coded in the End stage disease/6 months or less to live in J
section. I told her that via the MDS manual it states a doctors
certification must be present in the chart in order for this to be coded.
and I haven't seen any kind of certification of this kind in our hospice
resident's charts. She states its automatically assumed because they can't
be admitted unless they are deemed 6 months or less to live.
So what does the group think?
