Ann,
I think that the PPS cycle would need to start over
again and a discharge tracking form would need to be completed. Page 2-38
under "REsident is Admitted to Acute Care FAcility and Returns' states "If a
Medicare resident is admitted to an acute care facility and later returns to the
SNF, the Medicare assessment schedule is restarted with the Medicare Readmission
Return assessment followed by the 14 day, 30 day, etc. A Discharge
Tracking form, return anticipated and a REentry Tracking form would precede
this."
But I would call the hospital and make sure that
the resident was actually admitted, there is often misunderstanding about
that.

Subject: re: Restarting MC
assessments
Trying to clarify an interesting
situation:
Pt goes OTH at 1:30am, is admitted to the hospital, and is
discharged back to us at 1:30pm....Use Feb 11th as the day.
Since he was admitted, shouldn't we do a D/C and Reentry?
And since he was admitted, don't we have to start the PPS schedule again with
a readm (05)? It does not seem to make any sense to restart the process,
since he was only out for 12 hours. He was always in our bed at
12
midnight. The
acute care hospital is billing for the 11th, so if we restart the
PPS process, what is our 1st day of Medicare? Shouldn't it
also be the 11th, his day of return to us?
How does billing work if the hospital is
billing for the 11th?
Any help would be
appreciated.
