I'd like to chime in too, and say that yes, unfortunately, the surveyors often don't get the information as soon as they should. It isn't their fault (they are at the bottom of a long chai that starts at the federal level, progresses through there to the state level and filters down to the surveyors on the field) - and part of it is because the MDS is only a portion of the whole survey process (e.g. - they can't concentrate only on the MDS - they have many other things to do during the survey that don't necessarily relate to the MDS) . Other things contributing to it is lack of budget and cuts from the feds.... and etc..... Plus - there are many other surveys being done - not only SNF - but GACH (and all their varieties), Home Health, ICF-DD, Clinics, surgicenters, etc.. and all have different regs........ Plus the complaints as well that need to be investigated...... they have more than the MDS on their minds..

but sharing information with the surveyors isn't a bad thing to do....... of course when someone shares information with me as a surveyor part of my "openness" to it comes from their attitude..... (high and mighty - I know more than you do.... or, hey, I think I have some info here that might help both of us, would you take it into consideration.....) Yep - I'm only Human and respond as such no matter how much I try to always make the survey process as un-adversarial as possible. Trying to approach it as a team "you have to do your job, and I have to do mine - but in the end, we both have the same goal - high quality resident (or patient) care" is something I try to bring across in the surveys. And, if you ask those with whom I interact in a facility I almost invariably say something along those lines, and also tell them that yes I will probably find something that ends up in a deficiency, but it gives them an idea there is something in the process not working, so we look at fixing it and go on with life - it isn't the end of the world - and is a learning process for everyone.

hmmm, I am going on here - so will end this, but you get the idea, I think.

I know it may not be the most popular opinion, but I would like to chime in and say that, while there are surveyors out there who are somewhat challenged as well as challenging, there are also many who are intelligent, fair and really care about what they are doing.

Also, we have surveyors who participate in this group, and the ones who I am familiar with are always helpful and informative in their answers here.

Respectfully,

I had to copy several pages of the manual
to show them because they didn't believe me!
I had two surveyors (make the mistake of telling me) that they had never "been given" the new Manual. The third stated she may have received it while in training, but couldn't remember!
