I agree that there are med aids that could
pass meds and do a great job doing it (I have worked with one), however I have
worked in a facililty with med aids and the majority did not know why they were
giving the meds they were giving. I think that it is unfair to judge all
med aids based on the experience I have had with a few, but I still would
not feel comfortable having a med aid give meds to my Residents unless I knew
that they knew what they were giving and why. I do believe that if a
facility is going to have med aids then it is there responsibility to make sure
that they have compentcy tests done on a regular basis and unfortunately I don't
think that happens everywhere med aids pass meds. I would not want someone
passing meds to my Grandmother that I did not feel was competent. (I know
that just because you have a license that says you are a LPN or RN that it
does not automatically make you competent) but I would still feel better if a
licensed nurse was passing meds or giving treatments than if a med aid
was.(unless as I said before I knew that they knew what they were
doing)
