If the
meds are mixed with fluids, not "piggybacked" onto an independent bag of fluids,
do you count the fluid content in section K? For example, "2 grams Ancef
in 50 ml of D5W IV tid"...do you count the 150 ml of D5W? And is
there a caloric value to that that should be counted in K6a? And if
that is the case, where do you draw the line? Should not include the fluid
content in IV push meds, right? Or that in SQ meds? I'm
confused? Thanks for helping!
Monica

Subject: Re: Section KThe fluids given in IV piggyback solutions ARE to be coded in section K5a under Parenteral/IV if given in the past 7 days. Since K5a is answered, the dietitian must then determine the percentage of calories and daily parenteral fluid received. The change happened in August 2003 when section K5a was changed to read "Do include the IV fluids in IV piggybacks."/---------------------------------------------------------- The Case Mix Discussion Group is a free service of the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators "Committed to the Assessment Professional" Be sure to visit the AANAC website. Subject: Section KPlease clarify parenteral/IV inclusions. I have new dietician coding for calories and fluid intake for IV meds (section K5a, K6ab). Is this correct? Please advise. Thanks in advance.
