Please refer to appendix E of the MDS 2.0 manual. Phenobarbital is listed as a hypnotic, so it would need to be coded as hypnotic in section O.

See pg. 3-180. As far as the drug listing on Page App 3-1, you can tell this listing has not been updated in a while. A lot of the newer meds are not on there, ie Resperdol, Zyprexa, Ambien, etc. I would not code Phenobarbital as an antianxiety. In every drug book we have (PDR, etc), it is listed as an anticonvulsant. I believe this listing may be old and Phenobarbital in years gone by, may have been listed as an antianxiety, but I have not seen it used this way in many years. Brenda W. If it's used as a hypnotic, it would have to be coded as such. -----Original Message----- From: Libby Cawthorn [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2004 12:25 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Section O All of our drug books and pharmacy list as anti-convulsant -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Salvatore, Linda Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2004 9:33 AM To: AANAC Listserv (E-mail) Subject: Section O Can anyone help me? Phenobarbital in Section O, listed as what? I always thought it was an anticonvulsant, and my pharmacist is saying it is a hypnotic. The MDS Manual from Briggs has it listed as an antianxiety agent. Can anyone tell me what they code it as on the MDS?
