THERE IS NO REIMBURSEMENT FOR THIS IN A SNF (yes I know all caps is shouting but it seems to call for it). We are a hospital based SNF and frequently give blood and have been told by our FI that there is no way to bill. Your patients need to be shipped to the hospital as short stays or overnight admits and THEN they can bill for it. We have to convince our medical board of this fact of life ourselves.

We are looking at giving blood at our SNF unit and have a question about billing if anyone know the answer to this I would appreciate the help.

  • Can we send a pt to observation at the hospital as an outpt and they bill for blood and services?
  • Is there a rule on transporting blood to SNF unit?
  • Can SNF bill for blood and services after the 3 unit of blood?
  • Any input from anyone that has dealt with this situation?

       Thanks Lisa
