An admission assessment has nothing to do with Medicare. 8a is state required, 8b is for Medicare only. No matter how many times a Med A resident goes out you always code them a (5) Medicare readmission. If you have not ever coded 8a as a 1 (one) that has to be completed with Raps by the 14th straight day of stay. Hope this clearifies it all. It may help you if you are looking at a MDS when you try to understand 8a & 8b.
