If the patient is a medicare client and you have a written plan of treatment and MD orders, you should be able to count the OT minutes. IF the assessment is a TRUE annual (pt there for 1 year) he is not likely to be in a medicare covered stay so counting those minutes may or may not be useful to you. You should be able to "check" the appropriate sections in P for training to return to the community, and if pt has been in restorative program, count them there under "other" if the OT sessions are in conjunction with the existing restorative program.

Subject: OT and training on equipment

I have a patient who is being discharged in a couple of weeks. We are in the process of completing an annual MDS. Can we count minutes that OT spent training the patient and his wife in the use of equipment that will be sent home with him. He is a rehab patient who has been recovering from a stroke complicated by a hip fracture. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks.
