If the resident continued to receive skilled services after she exhausted her Medicare
days (tube feeding with at least 51% of calories through the tube or at least 26% of
calories and 501 cc per day through the tube), she would not have had a break in the
spell of illness (skilled services). She would NOT be able to qualify for a new
benefit period no matter what the reason for hospitalization.

Subject: Spell of illness-Rena, please respond.

If a patient is admitted for skilled services for feeding tube and exhausts
all Medicare days...goes on Medicaid...next year goes to hospital...comes
out with continued feeding tube....can she be skilled? Does the
hospitalization have to pertain to the feeding tube?
