Hello Folks,

Last June I sent a message to this group as per a request from my Canadian Dr, Dr. Pierre Laneuville-McGill to provide some details on the Quantitative PCR testing initiative being funded by Novartis.Unfortunately it coincided with a “private” launch of a qualitative PCR testing program and the information I was trying to relay to Canadians on the list got lost in some sort of shuffle. A few people have written to me privately asking for information, most of which was given in my original two posts back in June.Apparently people are trying to call Novartis to get information on the program, and that is not necessary. If you would like to make sure that you get Quantitative testing on your PB and you are not going to one of the centres listed below, you can have your doctor contact the centre. There is no charge to you or your hospital for this. But like everything else if you do not ask for it, you might not get it…

Dr. Laneuville chaired a session at the Canadian Bone Marrow meeting in June, which included Dr. Lipton from the Princess Margaret hospital. Here is the summary of my posts from June 3rd and June 10th:

Suzan McNamara and I will be meeting with Novartis shortly so if you have any questions, please contact me directly.

I have just returned from my monthly check up with my Dr. here in Montreal, Dr. Pierre Laneuville; he is up to date on this program. As promised last week, here is an update on the Canadian PCR Standardization Program.

The idea of the program is to try and capture as much information as possible. There are 6 centres in Canada that can offer standardize quantitative PCR test to any patient in Canada. The sensitivity of the test is to 100,000.

The six centres are:

L’Enfant Jesus in Quebec City

Hpital Maisonneuve Rosemont – Montreal

Notre Dame – CHUM – Montreal

Royal Vic – MUHC – Montreal

Princess Margaret HospitalToronto

Vancouver General – Vancouver

If you do not get tested at one of these centres, you can request to have your PCR sample sent to the nearest centre – free of charge.I think it is a good idea to start tracking this data.Hopefully you can ask your doctors about having your samples sent to the test centres – more is better! From what I understand this data is also being tracked in Italy and I hear Germany will also start tracking the data in the very near future.

Each of these centres are supposed to be strictly adhering to the standards, meaning that one sample would yield the same test result if it were tested at each of the six centres.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require additional information, I will do my best to get an answer for you.
