Dear Gloria, Busulfan is used in lieu of radiation in some Centers for CML transplants. Our friend, Andrew, had his transplant at MDAnderson and received Busulfan, NOT radiation. The Hutch uses Busulfan as well for individuals over a certain age or for individuals they feel cannot tolerate radiation. Some Centers do not use radiation unless they feel the leukemia is very aggressive (I think this is MDAnderson's position), and will use Busulfan instead. I would ask your doctor for his/her rationale for using Busulfan instead of radiation and the explanation will probably be a very good one.
