Hi,

My mom used to take Foxamax and I remember that she would take it when she first got up in the morning. She was instructed not to eat or drink anything for 1/2 hour. She was also told to stay up and not lie down and if she could walk around, it would be better than sitting in a chair. She was never sick from it. Not sure your wife knows this so thought I would mention it. Take care,

I can't offer a direct answer to your question, but I will mention that my wife (non CML person) takes Fosamax and it makes her extremely nauseous for 45 minutes to an hour. I still get pretty nauseous for an hour or so after each dose (400mgs, twice a day) of Gleevec. I imagine the combined nauseating effect of Fosamax and Gleevec would be quite considerable. Also, I believe Fosamax is to be taken without food and Gleevec should be taken with a meal. This means you would probably have to take the Fosamax during a time in between meals, which means you would have an extra bout of nauseau on the Fosamax days. Yuck!

This probably goes without saying, but if your primary care physician did not specifically tell you there are no contraindications involved with taking both Gleevec and Fosamax, please don't assume there are none. Double check with your oncologist if there is any doubt about this.

Dear Friends in CML, I found out the results of my dexascan today. I am on the edge of osteopenia, and my primary care physician is prescribing Fosamax for me to take. Has anyone else been diagnosed with bone loss since taking Gleevec? I have been on Gleevec since July 2002. It has been 5 years since I had my first dexascan, but it was very normal then.
