Though my husband and I would considerate ourselves liberals, we live in a very conservative area. It is where I grew up, and where my family still lives. My family, for the most part, are active Christians and Republicans, and they do represent the prevailing attitudes.
My husband would not agree with most of the people that he works with in regard to religion and politics. But he has managed to carve out a niche for himself here, and is much admired. I have had many friends through the years who would certainly not be termed liberal, but have made valuable connections with them. Good people are good people, whether they are Republicans or Democrats. And bad people are bad people("bad" meaning intolerant, ethnocentric, lacking empathy and insight and restraint) whether they are Republicans or Democrats. We do, of course, have both on this list. Unfortunately, the bad ones seem to be the loudest.
We are moving to what I would consider a more diverse environment, and I am ready for it. But that doesn't take away from my love for my conservative and god fearing little family, or my appreciation for the many kindnesses of the people that I have known here. Rosemary Cohen(we obviously do have different religious backgrounds!!! My husband was raised in the Jewish religion, and my parents were Methodists and Presbyterians......devotedly so!)
