Dear Giora,   No problemo.  I love to be teased.    For years, I've enjoyed book browsing and reading, so eventually some of these words get stuck in my few remaining brain cells, and then pop out, when I least expect it.  I also suffer from paronomasia (puns and word play) and frequently tell bad and boring jokes, (at least, that's what my daughter always told me when she was young).   I apologize for verbiage, but I'm just a bit weary.  I've been connected to this group since '97 and miss the old days when there seemed to be a lot less ego, antagonism, and a lot more love, tolerance and playfulness.   Back then, BMT's and Interferon were state of the art, along with their nasty side effects and limited chances of CCR success.   As a result, everyone's medical battle, seemed more frequently, frightening.  STI-571 (Gleevec) was in early trials back then, and some pretty amazing group members went into accelerated phase CML and died.   Despite that, or maybe because of it, people seemed to reach out more to each other, trying to lend a helping hand.  Don't get me wrong, Gleevec is truly a wonder drug, and has reduced the likelihood of an early death from CML.      For myself, I continue to be anemic and can't take Procrit because of bad reactions, so my energy level is not up to par.  I have a lot of physical complaints that I won't go into just now, but I'm on a diuretic because of the edema from Gleevec, and also developed Myosistis (a muscle weakening) in my shoulders about seven months, ago.    My good news, (in addition, to my love of doing pottery), is that I'm now being seen up at the Portland VA, which is connected to the Oregon Health Sciences University.  Because they're a teaching hospital, I'll be getting BMB's every six months and PCR's every three, which is a great relief for me, after having to wait two years for my last one.    Best wishes,   Ralph CML,dxd5/97     ----- Original Message ----- From: Giora To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2004 4:17 AM Subject: Re: [CML] "Naff off" hallo ralph i lost my eanglish dictionary so i simply couldnt understand the nature of your post. where did you find words like "etymology", "epithet", "vituperation" "euphemistically" etc. i guess its time to hit the eanglish books again all the best giora btw my post has no intention of offending you ofcourse just a bit of teasing... ----- Original Message ----- From: ralphlee To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2004 12:59 PM Subject: [CML] "Naff off" Fred,   I take it that your idea of the ideal "SUPPORT GROUP" is one that is supportive, until you decide that others rightly deserve a bit of your self-justified "distaste", as you euphemistically, call it.   I'm sorry that you miss the point that in the previous "political" postings, it isn't the "information", per se, that causes discord in the group, but what people choose to do, or feel justified in doing with it, in order, to "support" their own sense of self-righteousness or feeling offended.  Of course, another alternative to what offends is to simply consider being supportive (ah, that word again), and tolerant of others.   Admittedly, like yourself, I too, am a failure in being supportive and tolerant of what you are doing, and perhaps, that's why my reply only leaves me in distaste for myself.   While people's behavior, motives, issues and language are rarely transparent, or what they seem, your use of the "Naff off", invective remains invective, along with your continued vituperation toward those, whom you call "knotheads".   I find this behavior both hostile and personal, and having little to do with the "pros and cons" of "political information", and that, was the point of my message to Rob.   Whatever your heritage or relation to the Royalty, you might want to consider the etymology below, (and by no means complete), of the little epithet you toss around, beyond the reference you are already familiar with.    Ralph CML, dxd5/97     ________________________________________________________________________________________ "The etymology of "naff" is ultimately unknown. According to Kieth Waterhouse, author of Billy Liar (the novel that contains the senior literary citation), "naff" was used by UK service personnel as an acronym of "nasty, awful, fuck it". Along the same vein, the acronym "NAFFI" has been used by UK service personnel as an acronym for "Navy, Army, Air Force Institutes" (equivalent to a US "PX"). Partridge suggests that "naff" may be a backslang formation of "fanny" (UK slang for "vagina").
