Those of you who are at PCRU and have not had a harvest, why not?
I would really appreciate your opinions as well as those who have
chosen harvest. What other risks are there?

Hi Mary,

Congrats on great PCRU results! That is great. When I was first PCRU
in 9/02, I asked my onc Dr. Charles Schiffer, about doing a harvest.
I told him it seems like a valuable thing for me to have in my back
pocket. He strongly disagreed, stating that if my counts were to
slip, he would rather have me do a MUD transplant than an autologous
transplant. (I have an estimated 50 possible donors out there). His
point was that if you are going to go through the struggle of a
transplant, you should go for the one that offers a potential long-
term cure. (The autologous is expected to buy a few years time as
opposed to being a sustained cure). I am 32 and considered a
relatively lower risk candidate for a MUD SCT, so perhaps that
played into his decision on that as well.

I don't feel strongly enough about the need for harvested cells to
push back on this one, but I will probably double check his opinion
on it at my next appointment to make sure nothing has changed in his
thinking. Just another point of view for what it is worth.
