Theresa & Gina,
"I have a question though to Kathy why did you added 10 miu interferon (intron a)after you are PCRU?" Well, that is the question of the hour. It was a very personal decision and certainly is not the right decision for everyone. I was diagnosed CML 3/02 and IM worked within 2 months but my onc was not satisfied because there is no cure chance with IM, since there is still proven minimal residual disease. The only curative option is transplant. But prior to IM, some (small percentage) of those treating CML with Interferon were able to stop after two years and not relapse. For one year he discussed the combo and answered my questions - he has over 3 decades experience in dealing with CML and stated he had no proof that this would work, and no guarantee. In 3/03 I agreed to try it thinking if it was too difficult and affected the quality of my life adversely - I would stop; and would only do it for 2 years. He readily admitted there was no way to measure the affect - but both drugs worked in different pathways and he hoped interferon would stop cml from rearing its' ugly head if IM stopped working. My husband is totally disabled with Parkinson's - I am his caretaker, and work full time and am raising our 16 year old daughter. I had a sibling match (brother passed away last Nov) but transplant recovery would not allow me to be there for my husband and daughter - and I am 52, not much chance with a MUD. So, I felt I could try this and maybe it would give me an edge. 3/03 I added 10 miu 3 times a week 8/03 dropped to 5 miu 3 times a week 3/05 will stop!! I have been able to tolerate it and still work full time (really have no choice) but I am beginning to notice effects that are becoming intolerable so maybe I will not make it to 3/05. I did not want to post my "trial" on the list - at the time there were many who were very much against interferon and I just didn't want to deal with that with everything else. I don't post often - simply don't have the time or energy - finally had to change my mail options to none - so I can go to the website occasionally and just read some. I really appreciate those who make the subject line relevant - it saves me valuable time. Thanks to all who do participate and pass on such valuable info.
