My name is Philip Kaplan and I'm new to this group.  I wish I knew about it before, but that's the way it goes.

Here's my history:
I was diagnosed with CML on Jan 4, 2002.  (my birthday, that's why I remember it).  I ended up being treated at Sloan Kettering, where I was put on Gleevec.  I guess I was a model Gleevec patient.  No side effects, and complete cytogenetic remission.   I thought I was home free, but my Doctor was not as comforting.  She kept pointing out the risk of relapse, and the dangers in there.

At her prodding, we discovered that my brother was a bone marrow match.  Now the decision was more difficult.  While I was in cytogenetic remission, I still scored PCR positive, and positive on the Fish (I never learned how to spell it) test.

I met with the Transplant department at Sloan, and things looked pretty grim.  They offered me 80% success rate.  Very, very depressing.

My wife and family, however, kept bugging me to explore other hospitals.  That's how I ended up flying to Seattle to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (Fred Hutchinson Institute).  There they offered much better odds.  95%.  They also said their success wasn't dependant on age, or an exact donor match.

I had the stem cell transplant on October 16, 2003, and just had my one year checkup.  I am now PRC negative and negative on all other tests.   They refused to give me the all clear though, vis a vis relapse, so I still qualify for this group.

I just did a quick search throught the archive and don't see any postings on transplants, so I'll be happy to answer any questions on the whole experience.

Phil
