New drug for Kaposi's Sarcoma
Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist Gleevec is an effective new treatment for Kaposi's sarcoma, the skin cancer that often affects people with HIV/AIDS Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center now report that the new anti-cancer drug imatinib mesylate (Gleevec) is effective in treating KS. Five men with KS, all HIV positive and taking antiretroviral therapy, were given Gleevec twice daily for four weeks. The lesions began to clear up in as little as two weeks - with one man experiencing a 90 per cent regression, and two others seeing regressions of 73 per cent and 58 per cent. In the other cases, the disease was at least stabilized. Gleevec is already licensed for treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia and a rare form of stomach cancer. The work with KS is now to be extended by a further clinical trial. Source New!
