Hi Peter and welcome to a group of wonderful warriors.
Your CML detection is similar to mine; I went in for a routine checkup after being tired a lot and not being able to walk like I usually did.
My wbc was 45 and platelets were 2 million.
I was sent directly to my onc and he did a bma and sent me to the hospital for blood aspheresis. The nurse doing the blood work told me to look at the blood coming out and you could see the white bloods cells very clearly. I was put on Hydrea; it's kinda funny, as I had never taken any kind of meds until then. They brought these huge capsules(I think about 8) and told me to take them. I ask the nurse what they were and the side effects and etc. She had to go and get a book to tell me. I still didn't realize they were chemo pills(I always swore I would take no chemo hehe) Well, it seems while in the hospital you seem to do everything they say.
Another funny story, funny now but not then, they told me I had to have a catheter put in my neck; they wheeled me down to a cold cold room and proceded to put in the catheter.
It took all of 15 minutes and when they were done, I thought wow! this wasn't so bad. I thought the cleaning of the blood was all done and over with; needless to say, when they brought in the blood cleaning machine, I was shocked. So I spent 4 days getting treatments that lasted 3 hours with this tube hanging out of my neck. The nurse said I wasn't losing any blood but they took away bags of red stuff that sure looked like my blood.
I think the blood goes through the machine that then cleans out the bad cells and returns the clean blood to you. It was very uncomfortable but not painful. As you lose calcium during the process, they give you tums and want you eat something before the cleaning.
I'll tell you another funny story later but will sign off for now.
Good to meet you.
