Hi Cheryl Anne and Chris,

Creatinine is a muscle breakdown product which is exclusively cleared from
the body by the kidneys. Unlike BUN (blood urea nitrogen), which waxes and
wanes with kidney perfusion (how well hydrated you are, that is), creatinine
builds up more slowly and is therefore a moderately good indicator of kidney
function, not just of hydration. There are exceptions though, the main one
being, as Cheryl-Anne says, when you exercise especially hard (or whack a
muscle, for that matter). Then, a lot of muscle protein can end up in your
serum and since it's cleared at a steady rate, it can show up elevated on
the metabolic panel.

I have wondered whether IM affects kidney function though. Curiously, my
creatinine was high-normal and sometimes even a little elevated the first
couple of years I was on the drug, though it's been in the mid-normal range
ever since. My BUN is often high, but I think that's because I don't drink
enough water when I exercise.

Cheers,
Richard R
