Hi Happymomag,
Sorry to hear about Terry’s problem
with gout and uric acid levels. I just recently had a severe gout attack
and went to my primary care physician, he prescribed indocin (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory)
to relieve the inflammation brought on by gouty arthritis. After
taking the anti-inflammatory, it took three days before the pain to subside and
another two weeks for the swelling to go away.
I have had two gout attacks since I was
diagnosed with CML (9/25/04). I can’t say that the attacks
are more severe due to Gleevec or CML side effects, but it does appear to take
longer for the pain and inflammation to go away.
Besides elevated uric acid levels, stress is
also a primary contributor. I was diagnosed with gouty arthritis at
an early age (23). At the time my physician attributed my gouty arthritis
to stress and an elevated uric acid level. I can attribute both of
my recent attacks to stress.
The reason you don’t want someone take
allopurinol in the middle of a gout attack is that a sudden drop in uric acids
will only exacerbate the gout attack. A too low or too high uric acid
level can contribute to a gout attack.
You should talk Terry’s primary care
physician about alternative medications, Advil can cause decreased liver
functions and Gleevec is already hard on the liver.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you
need more information.
Peter

Subject: [CML] Terry & gout
ok, folks....Terry's gout seems to be getting
worse....it is 12:30am
& he is yelling out in pain.....I looked at
WebMd & it suggested
something like Advil (NSAID)....so I gave it to
him....800mg
He has been on Allopurinol for a few weeks. WebMD
said something
along the lines that if you have have not been
taking the drug, don't
start during the middle of an attack.
But since his uric acid level
was already increasing previous to taking
Allopurinol, I am not sure
whether I would call his increasing pain from
several weeks ago an
attack...to where tonight it is an hard attack due
to severity of
pain.
okay...well I think the Advil must be helping...he
is calming down &
not screaming out any more.
argh!!! but very thankful!! Now,
all my children are up & kind of wondering
what to do. They were all
trying to find the heating pad, get Terry the
Advil, and worrying.
I just told them now to watch some TV or play
video games while I de-
stress!!! I did explain that I might take
Terry to ER, but we do
know what is wrong & have an idea of what help
he will need, so they
wouldn't worry about the unknown.
after talking with a friend whose hubby as
ALL......well, it seems
with CML....as you work through the disease...the
side effects cause
other side effects, so you can never just be
"okay".....is this a
fair assessment??
update....our financial aid app for MD Anderson
was submitted, now we
are awaiting approval....& might now by Mon or
prob Tues....then they
said he would have an appt in 3 weeks.
I also talked to the Patient
Advocate Foundation to get app forms for some of
the various
prescriptions that we are getting
prescribed.
Terry worked today, but was limping....and I could
tell he was going
down fast.....he also has some upper respiratory
problems on top of
it all.
He says the constant shooting pain has
subsided.....whew!!! He is
still uncomforatble, so I guess watch & wait.
Lora....a very worried wife
