Jamie, My mother-in-law was diagnosed 6 days ago. But I have studied biochemistry and human physiology at Uni so I had some general knowledge prior to the diagnosis.
I don't think you will be able to find out how long you have had CML in hind site, it requires a sample of te cells to diagnose the disease and the old samples would have been destroyed. Since you have had ongoing gall bladder problems, that is a very plausible cause for the high WBC count over the last decade, so you will never realy know when the CML started. Our oncologist/hematologist is looking into the possibility of a BMT. Because my mother- in-law is towards the upper age bracket for an unrelated donor BMT, we are going to check if her only sibling is a tissue match. If he isn't then we will have to decide whether to try a BMT early or wait and hope the gleevec keeps her CML under control. Add to the mix the chance that a BMT will also cure her of a debilitating autoimmune disease...there is a lot to consider. However he did say that he hopes it never becomes necessary to do a BMT.
