Hi Karyn,

Thank you so much for your kind email.

I read your words with astonishment but the more I read from this group the better I feel for joining.  I had heard that this disease could hit teenagers too, as rare as it is, but honestly didn't expect to hear from someone's mum!  I am glad you wrote to me, thank you.

I do intend to educate myself as much as I can, though at this stage I find everything daunting and a little overwhelming.

I just can't wait to get on Glivec at the moment.

Hi Jackie,

I'm sorry you've had to join our group but we welcome you to the best support and informational site you'll find.  The people here are warm and supportive.  You are right that the average age for diagnosis is in the upper 50's, but it does happen to other ages occasionally.  My son Tony, was diagnosed 3 years ago at age 12.  There are aprox. 10 other children and teens with cml whose parents read this site, as well as others from age 20 and up.  Gleevec is a miraculous drug, and you should do well on it.  There are many drugs which may prove to be even better in trials right now, and hopefully available to us just around the corner.  The best advice I can give you is to educate yourself, but don't read anything written prior to 2001 when Gleevec was introduced.  Knowledge is power, and being one step ahead of your oncologist isn't  a bad idea either :-)  Take care of yourself, don't over do it, and you'll be just fine.  Again, welcome to our support group.  Karyn, Tony's mom

Dear Group,

I have been diagnosed with CML two weeks ago and although I am determined to be 100% positive I am also scared.  Baffled too because this disease seems to hit older people.  I am 44 living in Melbourne, Australia.

I have to be OK for my two daughters.

I should be going on Glivec the end of this week or the beginning of next.

The doctor has told me that I have 80% chance of total remission in 3 months.  I can't wait to get on these pills and blast these damned things out.

Few symptoms at the moment apart from tiredness and a too large spleen which is annoying.

I am hoping that there is someone around where I live who I could talk to?
