Most people, 90% or more who apply for SS disabilty are turned down the first time they apply. If so, you take this letter of denial to a attorney that only handles disabilty cases and it is their job to prove to the disablity judge that you are in fact disabled. BTW, you do not have to pay the attorney, he gets paid when you do. If you or your attorney can get your doctor to write a statement saying you are disabled, this somehow seems to speed up the process. The SS office may require you to be seen by one of their doctors, and also mental health evauation. The SS doctor wrote a statement for my husband declaring him 100% disabled and he also had a statement from his doctor, but due to an alcoholic disabilty attorney, it took him 3 years to get it. He fired this attorney and hired another one and got it less than six months after the new attorney took over. As for myself, I couldn't get a letter from my quack oncologist/transplant doctor but applied anyway. I did have one from my primary doctor. I applied in May 2004 and by July 2004, I was approved without the help of an attorney. I was totally shocked.....and felt totally blest. Had I had to wait for even another 6 months, I would have lost everything I owned as my husband had left me at the time, the only income I had was a measely SS check my elderly mother recieved every month. The lady at the SS office that handled my application called me personally and told me I was approved and told me when I could expect my first check and my 3 months backtime. I couldn't believe my ears and I did ask her how did it go through so quickly, her words were, it is because you have a terminal illness and your case was expedicted. I wish this kind of blessing for all of you who are having to apply. The main thing is to be persistent, don't give up if they should deny you, appeal it every time you are turned down and try to find a good disability attorney if one is needed. Love, Peace, Hope & Prayers, Pat
