If any one hasn't mentioned it yet then I will be the first to tell you
don't ask for the traditional interferon....
If you struggle with Gleevec I don't think you can handle interferon any
better.
Those of us who were dx'd before Gleevec was available had to take this
drug. I myself took it everyday for one year along with another injection of
ARC 10 days a month. For those of you who were diagnosed after Gleevec
approval" believe me there's a lot to be grateful for"
For those that have such a difficult time with Gleevec I still wonder what
the real answers are to how are you treating your side affects and what are
you doing to prevent them?
I had almost 3 years of "all" the side affects and the biggest problem was
my fatigue.
Finally I decided to listen to the advice of others on this board and
started exercising everyday. (a little at a time and a little more each day)
I started drinking 80 ounces of water a day (for those of you who don't like
water, like me- try fruit 2-0 it is 100 % flavored water and sweetened with
Splenda) taking potassium supplements, calcium supplements and magnesium.
I feel like an idiot for not trying these things sooner since I am now
pretty much side affect free. Why it works I don't know??? I just know it
works... :)
I have gained back the energy I use to have and lost 3 pant sizes.
All I can say is "I wish I knew then, what I know now." And why the heck did
I wait so long to listen?!!!
Dx'd at 35 and just turned 40 this year. Feeling & Looking great!
I wish the same for all of you too....

Pat,
I know you are grieving and I am wondering how much that affects your
decision regarding the Gleevec. Soon the newer drugs will be on the market
and you will have some choices. Until then, please, please stay on the
Gleevec because it is suicide not to take this drug that will keep your
disease from progressing. You could always go back to the traditional meds
before Gleevec if you are struggling with the G. side effects. Why don't
you ask your doctor about something like the Interferon until the new drugs
are released?
I wish you the best and strength to make good decisions.
  Sue
