When I was in the seventh grade at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, Mr. McManus was our "shop" teacher. I don't know if Mr. McManus was a former Marine, but he fit the profile -- short hair, ramrod straight posture, no-nonsense attitude. He was the most intimidating teacher in school, and he couldn't have stood taller than 5-9 or weighed more than 160.
One Monday, we were sitting on our stools before class began and someone mentioned a television show that had been on the night before.
"I didn't see that," Mr. McManus said quietly. "I was driving back from Ohio. My father is seriously ill."
This was a revelation. Mr. McManus had a father? This no-nonsense, Marine-lookalike was human?
