Hi Amit,

AIIMS is one of the best hospitals in India. Talk to your Dad's
doctor when you get the BMA report. If CML is under control, then ask
the doctor why the red blood cell count and HGB are going down so much
. I have not seen it go down this much as a side-effect of Gleevec.
Also discuss with him if it is possible for your Dad to take Eprex
injections instead of having transfusions all the time. Eprex is a red
cell booster and will grow red blood cells. Some Gleevec patients who
have low red blood cell count take Eprex (it is called Procrit in the
US). In India, Eprex may be expensive, though.

If you find the doctor cannot pinpoint the cause of the low RBC, I
would advise your Dad to consult with either Dr. Suresh Advani or Dr.
Tapan Saikia in Mumbai. They are top oncologists in India and my
husband's doctor respects them a lot. Even if it means a trip to
Mumbai, I think it is worth it if no solutions are found. Don't lose
heart, Amit, you must be strong for your Dad and I am sure a second
medical opinion is always a good thing.

Please keep us posted.

Best Regards,
Anjana
