Dear Mary,

While WBC may remain normal on Hydrea for a while, it does not do
much for the cancer in the marrow. His Ph percentage may remain high
and his disease advance in time. Historically, majority of patients on
Hydrea have advanced in their disease and that is why Hydrea is not a
drug of choice to treat CML, it does not reduce the cancer marker in
the marrow. What you do not want is for his disease to advance into
accelerated phase or blast crisis on Hydrea and then even the new drugs
may not give durable remissions. They work best in chronic phase.

Best Wishes,
Anjana
