I am going to try to explain Jim's whole situation so you all realize
that it is not all the doctor's fault.
Jim started on interferon until gleevec came on board. He started on
400 mg a day ( I believe). As far as the cml was concerned it helped
tremendously and he got on zavie's zero list. Then the gleevec got to
be too hard on him and JIM kept asking the dr. to lower the dosage.
He finally took a break from gleevec all together and was doing great
until the fall of 2003 and his test showed positive. The dr. wanted
to put him back on 400 mg but Jim only consented to 100 mg to start.
He has been on 100 mg ever since and both his oncologists have tried
to encourage him to increase the dosage. Jim sees an oncologist at
the VA in Columbia, Mo and an oncologist in Springfield, Mo. -
neither of which we feel real confident. He had an absolutely great
onc in Springfield but unfortunately that dr. moved out of state.
Greenie, can I ask who you see and if you are happy with your onc?
I was really upset when his onc said he shouldn't worry about his FISH
results. We have a call into the dr. as we speak.
The other health concern Jim is dealing with is his heart. His heart
is only functioning at 20-25%. His heart surgeon and his cardiologist
both would like Jim to go off the gleevec cause it is so hard on his
heart. So you see Jim is in a catch 22 situation.
Jim is one of the most positive thinking people I know and that is
what has kept him going for so long. That and a lot of prayer.
I hope this explains the situation a little bit better.
Thanks again for all your responses.
Donna, wife of Jim
