Sounds like sound reasoning and good advice from your doctor.
Blessings to you!

Went to eye Dr. and he said Gleevec as well as other chemotherapy causes the
eyes to dry, creating friction and causing irritation to the blood vesels near
the surface of the eye. My left eye vesels are closer to the surface than my
right eye, causing the vesels in my left eye to open due to lack of tears and
friction. He placed temporary blocks in my tear ducts,(an option to using drops
every four hours), And if this works can have them permanantly placed in the
tear ducts. Only have problem ( eye bleeds) to left eye.

Hi Kothai:

I also had eye bleeds not so often for the first year, then they became quite
frequent the second year on gleevec. At 2 1/2 years I had a brain bleed. This
did not affect me permanently but I went off gleevec because of it. They tried
me on the next new one, (forget the name) and one dose gave me another eye
bleed. So instead of trying a third one I opted to go against the doc's
orders, (I was in total remission) and not take anything. Five years later I
am still not taking anything. I am still in cellular remission, thank God. I
did have a stroke (more serious brain bleed) one year after going off gleevec.
I do have less mobility in left side and repercussions from it. Thus my fear
of going back on anything for the cml until absolutely necessary. Every day is
a gift. This is not to say you will have the same reaction at all. Just what
happened to me.
Share with your doctor and test for how thick or thin your blood is, would be
my suggestion. Also check for family history of strokes, etc. I also try to
eat healthily and take many supplements to keep immune system strong.

Hi Kothai:

I have been on Gleevec since diagnosis in March 2009, bumped from 400 mg to 600
in 2010 which is when I started to experience eye bleeds. I've been told that
the Gleevec can weaken the vessels in the eyes so that if you have a heavy
cough or any straining, it can cause the bleeds. They are not dangerous but
they do look terrible. I have eye patches that I keep with me so that if I
have a bleed, I can put one on and look like a pirate! At least the patch
keeps people from having to look at the horrible redness in the eye. Have not
had one in several months so hang in there - we are all here to support you!

Best of luck.

Marcie
