It is Southern.  My mom would fry some bacon and pour her jarred  tomatoes 
in the grease and let them boil for a while.  We had it over grits  or 
cornbread.  I don't use the bacon, just pour some canned whole tomatoes  in a 
pan, add a little sugar and vinegar and let them boil.  I like it on  rice also.
