Hi Judy,

I see that your Creatinine level is currently at 2.4 You need to keep an
eye on that level. If it continue to rise then your eventually going to
need some sort of dialysis. It could be a couple of years but that all
depends on your creatinine level and also your clearance. Have your doctor
perform a 24 hour urine collection test called a GFR and he or she can see
the exact level of clearance.

Be sure to keep drinking a lot of water and try staying away from salt in
your diet. Also have your Albumin (protein level) checked.

If in the future you should require dialysis there are basically two kinds.
One is the traditional hemo dialysis where you go to a dialysis center
three days a week and sit in a reclining chair for four hours. You will
first have to have either an implant in your arm called a shunt or access
point, or have one put into your chest called an opti-flo. This is good for
a temporary solution because it is usually not as efficient as the one in
your arm.

Then there is what is called peritoneal dialysis that you can do at home.
They put in a small catheter into your abdomen and the first month you have
a 2.5 liter bag of glucose drip into your abdomen which takes usually about
twenty minutes. You leave it in there for four hours in which time you can
go about your business and after the four hours you just drain it out. You
must repeat this process for four times daily for the first month. It is
called manual peritoneal dialysis.

You must be very careful about infections. You must ware a mask and gloves
every time you handle the catheter. You must always thourally wash your
hands. They will deliver about 30 cartons of the dialysis fluid, each
carton contains 5 bags and you have to be able to store all of this in your
house.

After the first month you will be given a machine and you put the bag of
glosose into it then connect it up to your catheter and go to sleep for the
night. All of the exchanges are done automatically and when you get up in
the morning your dialysis is finished for the day. You must do this every
day for the rest of your life, but it sure beats going to a dialysis center
three times a week for four hours each time.

I know because I did try that peritoneal dialysis but unfortunately it
didn't work out for me. So I am on Hemo Dialysis until I can get a kidney
transplant.

Don't be upset about this because at least there is something that can and
will keep you alive. Sure it is inconvenient but you will find ways around
it and just go on with your life. How do I know? Because I am on Hemo
Dialysis and am still able to do most of what I used to do before it.

If you ever need any information or advice just get in touch with me and I
will help you out.
