Hi Marty, When I first started my Gleevec study on Jan. 10th 2000 Gleevec
had not yet been approved by the FDA. The next year May of 2001 is I
think when it went on the market. I received a report that from May until the
end of that year Novartis made 1.6 Billion dollars from the drug. And it's
been out their for over 13 plus years so I would think their not hurting
for money.

As always, all of you CML and caretakers folks, bless you all.

Millie,

I agree with what your son said about the company's costs in starting a
new drug. However since Novartis has already made billions of dollars because
of Gleevec then their start up costs probably have been satisfied many
times over.

Also if CML is such an "isolated" disease and Novartis doesn't think that
it is worth producing because in the scheme of things CML is not a prevelant
disease considering all of the other types of cancer and has to keep the
price of their older TKI's (Gleevec) for one still high and now your
mentioning even higher then Novartis has to realise that STI-571 now called
Gleevec has netted them billions of dollars for Gleevec alone. It really put
them
on the "map" from a fledgeling company to what it is now.

But, as I previously mentioned, cancer is a very profitable entity for
drug companys.

One thing that everyone including these drug companys has to realise is
that if a drug is priced so that no one can afford it then they can't sell
enough to keep their company in business so they now must charge huge prices
for it. Like a dog chasing it's tail...

18's,

Marty

My son, Rick, works for a Danish Pharmaceutical company at present and
they aren't into any cancer meds, mainly drugs for diabetes. At any rate, he

drugs is the reason that they cost so much and if they didn't have that
kind of money, it wouldn't make it cost effective to even create these meds.
Percentage wise, there aren't enough people in the world with CML and
other Leukemia that would make it worth their while to even try to make
Gleevec
or any of the other drugs that are keeping us alive. At any rate, I thank
God for the drugs and what they do to keep us alive. I know how very
expensive they are and it does seem ridiculous, but it is what it is.
After
he explained it all to me, then I could understand the costs etc. much
better.

Hope this helps a little.

New Cancer Drug - Bloomberg

Hi Greenie and everyone else,

As you know I have never been on any of these TKI's because I had a bone
marrow transplant. However I can say that whatever TKI you are presently
taking and it is working for you then you are still alive because of it.

What researchers may find out in the future will only make this disease
finally become crued and then none of you will have to take anything for
this disease.

I keep on telling you that there will be a cure for CML and maybe Gleevec
losing it's patent rights is it first step to this process.

Unfortunately everything today involves money and cancer treatment seems to
be on or near the top. Sometimes some competition may be toward all of our
advantages.

What I really don't like is that when STI-571 (now Gleevec) first came out
my friend Zavie Miler and myself had asked many people to invest in
Novartis to help support the company.

Now I realise that any of these drug companys have a huge outlay in start
up costs but when these costs are paid off then why not support those that
need this drug to survive?

Now that there are more and newer TKI's out there and the cost is another
consideration for the company's to bare and hopefully they will have a lot
of consideration cost wise to those that have to use it in order to stay
alive. Staying alive is a basic human right and I really wish that these
drug company's realise that.

By the way I happen to hold many shares in Novartis and I would never think
about selling them because I support the company. Now why won't the company
support all of you that need any of these TKI's? I also know that Novartis
has several programs that are compassionate so at least that is a big
start. That is why I said sometimes a little competition may be able to
help those that need these TKI's to survive.

Are you getting why I always end any of my messages with 18's.

It is because we are still alive.

18's,

Marty
