Andrew - (Full disclosure: My company is a Microsoft partner) We launched the first public-facing MCMS 2002 in the world site for a client and have been working with MCMS 2002 since the Early Adopter Program bits, so we have a bit of experience. Aside from having the nice title, I actually rolled up my sleeves as part of the implementation team, so I personally have experience. Finally, we have implemented MCMS 2001 as well, so I can compare/contrast.
MCMS 2002 supports both ASP and ASP.NET, and they can coexist as well, so there are a few basic strategies to upgrading. One strategy involves porting the site "as-is" from 2001 to 2002. At that point your site is still functioning, but it is functioning under 2002. Then you would convert templates one by one from ASP to ASP.NET. This allows you to handle any learning curves (.NET, C#, etc.) as well as spreading out your conversion cost. The other strategy involves continuing to have your current site served by 2001, developing only the absolute most necessary customizations (though additional templates are fine). Setup the 2002 environment and convert everything, then launch. Everything is done all at once, and you get major immersion in the tool. However, the site will continue to use 2001 for a longer time than the previous strategy. Unfortunately, due to the way ASP.NET works (e.g., code behind), you will need to rewrite functionality to move your site into .NET. Hope that helps. Let me know if you want me to go deeper on this question or if I can provide other insight.
